Study lines

Study lines are specialisations under the Master programme, offered for students starting September 2008 or later.

The master programme in Physics and Nanotechnology offers five study lines within the main subject areas of the education.

It is optional if you want to follow a study line, and no registration is necessary.  If, at the end of your studies, you fulfill the formal requirements, you can contact the programme coordinator and the name of the study line will be printed on your diploma.

Changes in 2012

The study lines are being redefined in 2012.  There are therefore two versions of each study line, one for students admitted in February 2012 (called pre-2012 version below) or earlier, and one for students admitted September 2012 or later (called 2012 version below).

The five study lines

We offer the following study lines.

Requirements (pre-2012 version)

  • 45 ECTS in courses within the field.  Follow the links above to see the courses for the four study lines.
  • Your master project should be within the field (see below).

Requirements (2012 version)

For students admitted September 2012 or later, the study lines are defined in a similar way as the education itself, but with stricter bonds on the selection of courses.

  • The majority of the basic courses and of the technological specialization courses should be taken from shorter lists with courses relevant for the given study line.  Typically 10 out of 15 ECTS basic courses and all the technological specialization courses should be within the field, but these requirements differ slightly between the study lines.
  • Your master project should be within the field (see below).

How do I sign up?

You don't need to sign up.  If you fulfill the requirements at the end of you study, you can contact the study leader Kirstine Berg-Sørensen and get the study line approved.  Just send an email from your official DTU email address (sXXXXXX@student.dtu.dk) to Kirstine () and state which study line you want on your diploma.  Kirstine will then check that you qualify and inform the study administration.  You should do this before you defend your thesis, but after all courses counting toward the study line have been passed.

Should I follow a study line?

It is entirely volontary to follow a study line, and we expect that a significant fraction of the students will not follow a study line.  We do not recommend making substantial changes to your study plan just to qualify for a study line, but if you are close to qualifying you should certainly consider it.

How do I get my thesis work approved?

If your supervisor is on the list of pre-approved supervisors for the study line, your thesis is automatically approved for that study line!  The lists appear on the pages describing the study lines.

If your supervisor is not on the list, your thesis should be approved by the programme coordinator.  It is recommended that you get this approval prior to starting on your thesis work by sending an with information about the desired study line, name of supervisor, title of the thesis work, and attach a description of the project if available.
